What is Assistive Technology and Alternative Media?
Assistive Technology is a term that includes a wide range of devices, products, and software that can be utilized by individuals with Disabilities to participate and interact with the world around them.
Examples of Assistive Technology include but aren't limited to the following:
- Screen Reader Software
- Screen Magnification Software
- Speech to Text (Dictation)
- Note Taking and Lecture Recording Tools
- Text to Speech Tools
Alternative Media is a term that is used to describe the creation of academic and instructional materials in a format that supports access for students with disabilities. Alternative Media can also be refered to at Alternate Media or Alternate Format.
Examples of Alternative Media include but aren't limited to the following:
- Electronic Text
- Braille
- Tactile Graphics
- Enlarged Font/Print
- Audio Conversion
Alternative Textbook Format Requests are submitted through the provided Microsoft Forms button below. Please be sure to fill out all necessary information as this will ensure you receive the correct materials in a timely manner.
Note: Please allow for up to two weeks for your request(s) to be processed and completed. The sooner you submit your request the sooner the process can be started.
Resources for ASC Students
Below are methods of accessing different resources that the ASC offers to students who have specific Academic Accommodations.
Kurzweil 3000 is a Text to Speech program that is commonly used to audibly listen to educational materials. The link below can be used to access the website version of the program, as well as the Kurzweil Academy. For instructions on how to access the Mac and or Windows Desktop Apps please contact the Assistive Technology and Alternative Media Coordinator.
