Canvas Updates
Canvas Updates
Incident Status
- The May 7 Canvas incident involved a security vulnerability that allowed unauthorized messages to be posted within Canvas. Instructure has identified and remediated the issue, and Canvas services became operational again last night.
- The District was awaiting final guidance and an operational recommendation from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office before issuing an all clear for campus use.
- Now that this guidance has been received, the Technology Services Department completed the necessary validation and precautionary steps to support the safe use of Canvas services.
At this time, there is no evidence of ongoing risk to Canvas or connected campus systems when standard security controls are followed. However, previously exposed user information could still be used in phishing or social engineering attempts.
Password Guidance
Earlier guidance recommended password changes out of an abundance of caution while
the incident was being investigated.
Based on the information currently available and the remediation actions completed, routine password resets are no longer being recommended at this time unless you believe your account credentials may have been compromised or you observe suspicious activity associated with your account.
-
Be cautious of unexpected Canvas messages or emails, especially those requesting passwords, or sensitive information.
- Do not click unfamiliar links or open unexpected attachments.
-
Report any suspicious activity to helpddesk@solano.edu.

The State Chancellor’s Office and the CCC Security Center consider it reasonable for districts to re enable access to Canvas at this time, provided that specific technical adjustments are done before system access is restored.
The College's Technology Services department is working on performing these steps as soon as possible and targeting restoring full system access to Canvas.
We will provide an additional update with an ETA by 3:00 PM.

Although Canvas may appear to come back online intermittently, faculty and staff are
strongly advised not to attempt to log in or use Canvas until you receive official
clearance from the college confirming it is safe to do so.
This precaution is being taken out of an abundance of caution to help protect institutional
and user accounts while Canvas system restoration efforts continue.
We also recommend that students update their password through the official college
website at solanocollege.org/password-reset

Instructure is reporting that Canvas system access is beginning to be restored. The California Community College's Chancellor’s Office, in collaboration with the CCC Security Center is working directly with Instructure to ensure that the system is fully secure. In accordance with statewide guidance, SCC recommends that students, faculty, and staff not access Canvas until further guidance is provided by the State's Chancellor’s Office.
